Introducing: Black/Black MICRO Tyvek Minimalist Wallet

When I decided to introduce black stitching to the black MICRO Tyvek wallet, I wanted to do something special. Logos are always challenging for a minimalist product. You want something subtle that complements the design without overpowering it. Yet, leaving a logo off entirely can make it feel unprofessional or generic.

The ideal I strive for is a “maker’s mark” …something that identifies an origin, indicates completeness, and integrates seamlessly into the design.

SlimFold Minimalist Tyvek Wallet - Black with Black Stitching Deboss

In harmony with this approach the logo on the new Black/Black wallet is integrated directly into the material itself. Instead of printing the logo as we’ve done with previous wallets, they’re applied as a separate step using a copper stamp. If you’re a fan of letterpress printing, the tactile feel of the depressions where the ink goes is part of the appeal. But if you don’t apply ink to the plate and apply a bit more pressure, you can also create an depression into the material- a process called a blind deboss.

I love the fact that the process echoes the way sculptors and metal smiths sign their work… and that one of the coolest elements of the design came from an idea the local embossing shop discovered.

As he ran the samples, he saw that he had to also apply some heat to get a really crisp impression. Tyvek is technically a sheet plastic and has a low melting point. (Don’t try running it through a laser printer.) So he soon found the maximum range. But with just the right amount of heat, he was able to produce a slight sheen in the bottom flat areas of the letters. This is because in addition to creating the indentation for the letters, it slightly melts those areas. It cools as soon as it reaches the air, locking in the difference in texture.

When I’ve shown them in person to people who really know printing, they first assume that we applied some kind of black foil. But printing something that small with perfect registration would be nearly impossible. It’s only because of the properties of Tyvek as opposed to paper that the effect is achievable.

The samples are approved and they're currently in production I'll be giving away a few of our samples in the coming days to help get the word out so enter below for your chance to win...

Love the new look! I’m all about accessorizing and finding the right color matches. I absolutely love my original Tyvek and have been getting my colleagues to switch their wallets over to the slimfolds.

I feel like I’m a QVC host when I take the contents inside my slimfold and put them in their wallet and show the comparison of sizes. Guys hate size comparisons, but for once the small guy is winning! ;)

@Derek – Awesome! Thanks for spreading the word! Yeah, I feel compelled to mention it to people too but it sounds too biased if I say something. Haha.
